Authorities are investigating a fatal skydiving accident that occurred Thursday afternoon in Perris, leaving one person dead and another critically injured.

According to the Riverside County Fire Department, emergency crews were dispatched shortly before 2 p.m. to the area near 600 E. Ellis Avenue following reports of a skydiving incident involving multiple parachutists.

When first responders arrived, one individual was pronounced dead at the scene. A second skydiver suffered critical injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Officials said a third parachutist involved in the jump landed safely and was not injured.

In a statement following the incident, Skydive Perris said the three individuals were friends visiting from overseas. The company stated that all were experienced skydivers with hundreds of previous jumps and that they were using their own equipment during the dive. None were participating in tandem jumps, according to the facility.

Preliminary information released by the skydiving center suggests investigators are examining the possibility of a collision during freefall. However, authorities have not yet confirmed the exact sequence of events that led to the fatal accident.

The incident has drawn attention throughout the skydiving community, where experienced jumpers understand the risks associated with the sport despite extensive training and safety measures.

Skydive Perris said it is cooperating fully with investigators and extended condolences to the victims and their families.

Officials have not publicly identified the deceased pending notification of next of kin. Additional details regarding the condition of the injured skydiver have also not been released.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine exactly what occurred during the jump.
