The Champaign community is mourning the tragic loss of 65-year-old Steven A. Cornett, a former Chief of Police of the Tilton Police Department, who was fatally struck by a vehicle while working on a road crew along Interstate 74 early Wednesday morning. His sudden passing has left colleagues, friends, and residents reflecting on a life defined by decades of public service and dedication to community safety.

According to the Champaign County Coroner’s Office, Cornett was struck near mile marker 180 on I-74 in Champaign County and was pronounced deceased at the scene at approximately 4:45 a.m. Officials confirmed that he suffered fatal blunt force injuries as a result of the crash. An autopsy has been scheduled as authorities continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

News of his death has prompted an outpouring of grief from those who worked alongside him throughout his long career in law enforcement. Cornett served the Tilton Police Department from 1984 until his retirement in 2017, building a respected career that spanned more than three decades. Over the years, he rose through the ranks from Patrolman to Lieutenant, then Captain, and ultimately Chief of Police, a position he held from 2010 to 2017.

Former colleagues describe Cornett as a steady and committed leader who helped shape the department’s culture and standards. His leadership extended beyond administrative duties, as he was also known for mentoring younger officers and setting an example of professionalism and integrity. Many within the department have shared tributes highlighting his guidance, experience, and lasting influence on those who served with him.

After retiring from law enforcement, Cornett continued his service to the public by working on roadway construction projects. At the time of the fatal incident, he was part of a crew involved in the Interstate 57/74 interchange reconstruction project in Champaign County, a role that kept him actively contributing to infrastructure work in the region.

The Illinois Department of Transportation expressed condolences to Cornett’s family, coworkers, and loved ones, while also emphasizing the ongoing dangers faced by workers in active roadway construction zones. Officials continue to urge motorists to slow down, remain alert, and exercise caution when approaching work areas to help prevent similar tragedies.

As Illinois State Police and the Champaign County Coroner’s Office continue their investigation, the focus in the community has shifted toward remembrance. Those who knew Steven Cornett are honoring not only his years of service in law enforcement, but also his continued commitment to public safety even after retirement.
