A heartbreaking tragedy has left the Cortlandt Manor community in mourning after two teenagers lost their lives in a devastating house fire early Wednesday morning. Authorities identified the victims as Alina Toone and Jeremiah Toone, the children of Westchester County Correction Officer Gregory Toone. The fatal fire broke out at a home on Sherwood Road in the Town of Cortlandt during the early morning hours. According to New York State Police, troopers were dispatched to the residence around 2:27 a.m. after reports of a residential structure fire. By the time firefighters arrived, the home was already fully engulfed in flames. Officials said that a mother and another occupant were able to escape the burning home before emergency crews arrived. They informed firefighters that two teenagers were still trapped inside the residence, prompting an immediate and urgent rescue response. Firefighters worked rapidly under extremely dangerous conditions, deploying ground ladders to reach the second floor and forcing entry through windows in an attempt to locate and rescue the trapped teens. Both Alina and Jeremiah were pulled from the home in cardiac arrest and immediately given CPR at the scene. Emergency responders transported both teenagers to nearby hospitals in a last effort to save their lives. Despite extensive life-saving measures, both were later pronounced dead, officials confirmed. The tragedy has sent shockwaves through Cortlandt Manor and beyond, particularly within the local law enforcement community. Westchester County District Attorney Susan Cacace issued an emotional statement expressing condolences to the Toone family and acknowledging the profound loss suffered by Officer Gregory Toone and his loved ones. Friends, neighbors, and members of the broader community have since shared messages of support, sympathy, and grief, describing the incident as an unimaginable tragedy that has deeply affected all who have heard the news. Investigators with New York State Police and local fire officials continue to examine the cause of the blaze. Early indications suggest the fire may have been accidental, possibly electrical in nature, though authorities have not yet confirmed an official cause. As the investigation continues, the Cortlandt Manor community remains united in mourning, remembering Alina and Jeremiah Toone and offering support to their grieving family during this profoundly difficult time.
