The Gainesville community and the University of Florida are mourning the tragic loss of Brooke Smith, a 24-year-old nursing student whose life was cut short in a fatal shooting that has left family, friends, classmates, and colleagues devastated.

According to the Gainesville Police Department, officers responded Tuesday night to reports of gunfire at the Creeks Edge Condominiums on Northwest 23rd Boulevard. Upon arrival, they found Brooke Smith suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite emergency response efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators identified 31-year-old Xavion Perry as the suspect and reported that the shooting appeared to be connected to a domestic relationship. Authorities stated that preliminary findings indicate Smith had been attempting to end or distance herself from the relationship, and the situation allegedly escalated into a fatal confrontation. Police later launched a search for Perry after he fled the area.

Brooke Smith was a student in the University of Florida College of Nursing and was expected to earn her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in August. University officials expressed profound sorrow following her death, describing her loss as deeply felt throughout the college and campus community. Faculty members, classmates, and friends remembered her as a dedicated student who worked tirelessly toward a career centered on helping others.

Beyond her academic achievements, Brooke was known for her kindness, compassion, and positive spirit. Colleagues at Yoga Pod in Gainesville, where she worked, remembered her as someone who brought warmth and encouragement to those around her. The business temporarily closed in her honor as staff and patrons mourned her passing.

The search for Perry eventually led authorities to the Daytona Beach area, where law enforcement attempted to stop his vehicle. Officials reported that he fled, abandoned his vehicle, and entered the water near a pier. Following an extensive search involving multiple agencies, a body was recovered the following day and later identified as Perry.

Brooke Smith’s death has resonated deeply throughout Gainesville and beyond. Many who knew her have spoken of her ambition, generosity, and commitment to caring for others. As someone preparing to enter the nursing profession, she was viewed as a young woman with tremendous promise and a bright future ahead.

The tragedy has also renewed conversations about domestic violence awareness and the importance of recognizing warning signs in unhealthy relationships. Community organizations continue to encourage individuals facing abusive or controlling situations to seek support and assistance before conflicts escalate.

As friends, family members, classmates, and colleagues gather to honor Brooke’s memory, they are remembering a life defined not by the tragedy of her death, but by the compassion, dedication, and kindness she demonstrated throughout her life.

The Gainesville community extends its heartfelt condolences to Brooke Smith’s family, friends, and all who are grieving this tremendous loss. Her memory will continue to live on through the countless lives she touched and the legacy of care and service she was preparing to bring to others. May she rest in peace.
